Peas

Anttila's farm is specialised in the production of picked pea pods. The cultivation of pea pods began in 1979. The farm produces pea pods from midsummer to the turn of August-September.

The varieties of peas cultivated at Anttila’s farm:

• Avola (early, sweet)
• Panf (almost as early as the avola)
• Early Onward (large peas, sweet, slightly later than the avola) Onward (large pods, sweet, late)
• Utrillo (large pods, medium-term)
• Protor (large pods, later than the avola)

The area of the farm which is allocated to peas is about 32.5 hectares. The peas are sown directly. The new peas are grown under cover.

Anttila’s farm employs tens of workers for the picking of peas during the summertime. The farm has modern accommodation facilities for the pickers. In addition to the peas, the employees also pick up berries and raspberries during the latter part of July.

The peas from Anttila's farm are marketed by Satakunnan Hernerengas Oy. Our farm store sells ready-picked peas for retail or wholesale from early morning until late at night. Our offer in regards to a bucket of peas (the bucket is included in the price) has been very popular. The peas are packed in different consumer and wholesale packages. All in all, the area that Satakunnan Hernerengas Oy uses to cultivate peas measures 70 hectors.

Satakunnan Hernerengas Oy have researched, along with the Satafood Development Centre, pea storage and warehousing temperatures and have performed variety tests to find new pea varieties for the Finnish market. New pea varieties are tested annually. During the summer of 2009, we will test 10 new varieties.
